GENERAL NOTE ABOUT JOB DESCRIPTIONS at NYR

The purpose of a job description is to make sure that both the individual and the company are clear about the role, responsibilities and tasks the post-holder is expected to carry out and how the post-holder contributes to the aims and objectives of Neal’s Yard Remedies.  However, we operate in a rapidly changing and highly competitive environment, so it is important that job descriptions are flexible, to enable the company to respond quickly to changes and to accommodate the development of the individual.  Job descriptions will be reviewed at least once a year as part of the appraisal process.  In addition, they will be reviewed prior to recruiting.  Job descriptions will be supported by objectives that are specific to the individual and set out the targets, goals and improvements to be achieved in a set time period.

 

CONTEXT

The Senior Graphic Designer plays a key role within NYR’s in-house Design Department, reporting to the Head of Creative Design.  The Department consists of a total of four people, the Head of Creative Design, Junior Artworker and Studio and Marketing Coordinator.

 

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

The look of our products and promotional material has played and continues to play a fundamental part in the success of Neal’s Yard Remedies.  It is vital that the NYR look is maintained and evolved within the company’s overall design philosophy and values.  It is also important to understand how the role of design and the Design Department fits in with the overall functioning of the company and the Senior Graphic Designer is therefore expected to be involved with and contribute to the overall success of the business.

 

The post holder will work closely with the Head of Creative Design on a range of visuals, promotional and in-house artwork.  Internally, the post-holder will liaise as necessary with colleagues in the Design Department, the sales teams (UK and International), New Product Development, Production and Education/Customer Service.  Externally, there will be contact with print, packaging, label suppliers etc.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.       Design, Artwork and DTP

·         To work on design projects under the guidance of the Head of Creative Design.  Including point of sale materials, posters, shelf talkers, product labels, promotional literature, mail order catalogue, packaging, website etc.

·         Provide guidance and creative direction to the Junior Artworker.

·         Take ownership of agreed projects from concept to execution.

·         Assist in signing off artworks which come through the studio.

·         Act as a point of contact for the department in the absence of the Head of Creative Design.

·         To maintain the look of Neal’s’ Yard Remedies.

·         To ensure all work produced meets NYR standards.

·         To implement design briefs to the agreed timescales.

·         To contribute to the successful operation of the Design Department.

·         Attend and contribute regular design meetings.

 

2.       Administration and Equipment

·         To liaise with the Studio and Marketing Coordinator to report on the project progress and keep accurate records of all artwork and material produced.

·         To ensure that all materials, record-keeping and filing of data conform with NYR and Design Department standards

·         To ensure that all equipment, hardware and software is used and maintained properly.

 

3.       Health & Safety

·         To take reasonable care for your own health and safety and of other people affected by your actions.

·         To comply with NYR’s Health and Safety procedures e.g. first aid, fire, COSHH, manual handling, etc.

·         To report health and safety risks and hazards to the Head of Creative Design or local Health & Safety Representative.

·         To cooperate with the Head of Creative Design.  or local Health & Safety Representative when risk assessments are being conducted and to implement any changes made as a result of risk assessments.

 

4.       Continuous Improvement and Self Development

·         To champion the idea of continuous improvement within the Design Department and NYR generally.

·         To seek ways of improving how the Design Department operates and looks for opportunities to do things more effectively.  This includes learning from mistakes.

·         To research and implement solutions to problems and encourage problem solving in the Design Department.

·         To help and encourage the Design Department and other departments improve their performance.

·         To develop your own skills and knowledge and improve your own performance through seeking opportunities to learn.

 

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Most of the time the post-holder will be working from the Design Department which is currently located at 23 Monmouth Street, Covent Garden , London WC2H 9DD.  Occasionally it will be necessary to visit other sites (mainly NYR premises) for design projects, meetings or training.  By the very nature of the job, sometimes it will be necessary to work additional hours to meet deadlines.
